SEO Friendly Images - WordPress Plugin Review

Recommended, Reviews, S-Tastic!, WP Plugins

Vladimir Prevolac’s Wordpress plugin is an absolute saver for the lazy amongst us. Essentially, every image we use should have both an alt and title tag associated with it. These tags Vladimir describes as follows:

ALT attribute is important part of search engine optimization. It describes your image to search engine and when a user searches for a certain image this is a key determining factor for a match. and TITLE attribute play lesser role but is important for visitors as this text will automatically appear in the tooltip when mouse is over the image.

and I would only add that IE seems to be able to use the alt tag for the tooltip whereas FireFox will only use (correctly) the title tag.

To control this plugin you simply upload and activate in the normal way and then (in WP 2.5) go to settings > SEO friendly images and you are presented with the setting options.

First up is your options for the way that the alt tag will be handled - you are given a variety of options as to how this will be generated (% in front of the word denotes a variable - a word on its own will always appear as written).

SEO Friendly Images

Next up (and in the exact same format) is the title tag.

If you don’t do this yourself then I would strongly recommend that you download and install this plugin - it will make the world of difference to the effectiveness of images in your posts and their visibility to search engine spiders and robots that come by.

I do think that anyone who is very familiar with how important these features are will always be using them anyway, and I doubt that any of those people would leave it to a plugin to control. Having said that - if you are lazy, forgetful or just cannot be bothered to manage this yourself - then this plugin is a must have.
